Asbestos Inspections

Pilot provides asbestos inspections and abatement design services to assist clients with building renovations and demolition. Pilot personnel has experience with industrial and manufacturing facilities, schools and universities, single and multi-family housing, senior living facilities, hospitals, medical offices, and retail centers. Asbestos has been used commercially in the manufacturing of building products since the 1800s.

Asbestos fibers can be found in a wide variety of materials including:

  • Decorative ceiling texture
  • Joint compound used as filler on drywall
  • Vinyl floor tiles
  • Floor tile mastics
  • Vinyl sheet flooring
  • Mastics or adhesives
  • Pipe and HVAC insulation
  • Furnace and duct tape
  • Window glazing
  • Exterior siding
  • Various roofing materials

Asbestos was mostly phased out of these building products in the 1970s and 1980s. However, it is still mined in other countries and used in building products today.  Public and private building owners often inspect their buildings so that they can protect their employees and adhere to OSHA requirements.  The National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants requires all buildings, despite their age, to be inspected by a licensed asbestos inspector prior to being demolished or prior to significant renovations.  Additionally, an asbestos abatement design is sometimes required, depending on the type and quantity of asbestos removed, to help protect public health and adhere to local, state and federal regulations.
